What am I doing?

I'll be composing a canon every day from January 1 2009 to January 1, 2010. I'll start with very simple canons and just go wherever it takes me. I expect to use a variety of approaches and styles. Along the way, I'll explore the writings on canonic technique by various authors throughout the history of music and I'll analyze and discuss some interesting and important canons by a variety of composers.

Why am I doing this?

This is where I should insert a witty or sarcastic explanation. Sorry --I just don't have one. The true answer is "just to explore." I have a strong background in counterpoint and fugue (including having studied with Alfred Mann, whose translation of Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum is invaluable) but I find that I haven't really written more than a handful of canons. This is simply a way to make myself write a few hundred of them.

Why a blog?

The pressure of public exposure will keep my proverbial feet to the fire.

Why a year and a day?

It's the traditional time of commitment for my ancient Celtic forebears -- courtship, studies, apprenticeships -- it just seemed like the right thing to do.
